When most people think of a perfect beach getaway in Mexico, places like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, or perhaps Cabo San Lucas comes to mind, those areas are extremely popular with vacationers looking to escape the everyday grind of life, but those popular areas are not the only stretches of sand to let it all go. Mexico has literally thousands of miles of sandy beaches not spoiled by the excesses of tourism, and one of those streches is known as Puerto Escondido, the Hidden Port.
Located in the southernmost part of Mexico, Puerto Escondido consists of a main beach known as Playa Principal, a couple of serene coves perfect for swimming, the surfer's paradise of Zicatela, and endless miles of deserted beaches with absolutely no development on them. What makes Puerto Escondido magical is its lack of basically all things modern. It's the perfect place to escape the 21st Century.
Just east of the main part of the main part is the surfer's paradise of Zicatela Beach, which contains some of the largest breaks on the Mexican Pacific.Playa Carrizalillo is a magical cove located just west if the main area of Puerto Escondido. It's a little difficult to access to due to the lack of parking and a steep set of stairs, but it's definitely worth getting to. On the bottom of the cove is a beautiful stretch of sand with shaded palapas and rocks just off the beach which are perfect for snorkeling behind. It is also a perfect place to learn how to surf as the breaks are gentle here. Carrizalillo was a hard place to want to leave. Truly a hidden gem that for me was worth discovering. From the rocky points to the magical coves is a magical place that I will most definitely return to someday, God willing.
